Preparation of hexafluoropropylene

Hexafluoropropylene (HFP) is one of the basic raw materials of organic fluorine industry. Its importance is second only to that of tetrafluoroethylene. It is the comonomer of many fluorine containing copolymers and the intermediate of many fluorine containing compounds.

Generally, hexafluoropropylene is a colorless and odorless gas, which is toxic, does not burn in the air, and its boiling point is - 29.4 ℃. Under pressure, hexafluoropropylene can be stored and transported as liquid without adding stabilizer.

The industrial production method of hexafluoropropylene has been studied abroad since the 1950s. DuPont first developed the process technology of producing hexafluoropropylene by pyrolysis of tetrafluoroethylene. The reaction equation is as follows:

This is a very complex reaction. The reaction system is exothermic, and the reaction temperature is not easy to control. Excessive temperature or local overheating can easily lead to disproportionation reaction. Carbon generated by disproportionation reaction is easy to block the reactor.

In addition, tetrafluoroethylene is easy to self polymerize in the reaction process, and a considerable amount of by-products will be generated in the pyrolysis reaction. Therefore, the final product contains a variety of impurities, such as unreacted tetrafluoroethylene, octafluorocyclobutane, perfluorobutene, etc. It is difficult to purify and separate. In particular, it is worth noting that the pyrolysis of tetrafluoroethylene is prone to produce a colorless gas called "perfluoroisobutylene". This by-product is very toxic, and a small amount of inhalation can cause pulmonary edema, adding unsafe factors to industrial production.
